The requirements for being a police officer are: 

  • must be 20 years and 180 days of age at the time you apply
  • vision that is correctable to 20/40 binocular
  • normal hearing in both ears
  • must pass a departmental physical and psychological evaluation prior to being hired
  • U.S. citizen
  • had to have graduated from high school (G.E.D. is accepted if you have 60 college credit hours)
  • two years full-time work experience (Bachelor's degree or higher may be substituted for work experience)
  • valid driver license


Tattoo Policy

  • Richardson PD employees may display tattoos based on the following criteria:

  • Prohibited tattoos

    • Current and future employees are prohibited from displaying tattoos, body art or brands on any part of the hands, neck, face, head, eyelids, mouth, and ears with the following exceptions:

      • Tattoo of one wedding band on a ring finger (is permitted) 

  • Tattoo Review/Approval

    • If an employee desires to uncover/display a previously obtained tattoo, he/she shall submit a request for approval

    • If an employee desires to uncover/display a new/future tattoo, he/she shall submit a request for approval


The physical fitness assessment consists of:

Concept 2 Rower machine:

  • 2,000 meter row
  • Must achieve at least 40% at difficulty level 5
  • Based on gender, age and weight
