Common Questions

1.   Are you hiring?

      Yes! We have openings for Police Officer and 911 Dispatcher

2.   How soon should I apply to be a police officer?

      We suggest applying at least 3 to 4 months prior to the start of our next police academy

3.   How long is the hiring process?

      It typically takes 2 to 3 months, from applying online until a conditional job offer is made

4.   After applying online, what happens?

      We will contact you within 2 to 3 business days to schedule your written test and PT test

5.   What is the current PT test?

      Basic Job Requirements

6.   Is the type of PT test changing soon?

      Yes, beginning Monday, 03/04/2019, the PT test will be the Concept 2 Rower machine

7.   Is there a practice test for the Concept 2 Rower test?

      Yes! We offer familiarization and practice tests for the Concept 2 Rower

8.   What are the work/educational requirements to be a police officer?

      You must have at least two years of full time work experience (part time does not count)


      Bachelor's degree or higher will be accepted in lieu of work experience

9.   Do you have a lateral entry program?

      Yes! We hire Certified Texas Officers, Out-of-State Certified Officers & Experienced Dispatchers

10. How do I apply for the lateral entry police officer position? I don't see the posting.

      Apply using the Apprentice Police Officer posting, we will then move you to the Lateral process

11. How does living out of town affect the hiring process?

      We have an out-of-town testing week once a month for those who live at least 400 miles away

12. Are there non police officer positions available at the Richardson Police Department?

      Yes! The Richardson Police Department employs approximately 100 full-time civilians

      We currently have openings in civilian positions for: 911 Dispatcher

13. Are employees allowed to have visible tattoos?
